The Art Garage Opens Alternative Gallery Space in Columbia, SC

The Art Garage in Columbia, SC, would like to announce its Premiere Exhibition which will be on view from Dec. 4 through Jan. 18, 2002, (except the week after Christmas).

The exhibit is anchored by the three dimensional work of Bernadette V. Vielbig whose most recent exhibits include the invitational alternative/public space exhibition Accessibility, in Sumter, SC, and the 4th Annual SECAC Members Juried Exhibition, at the SC State Museum, in Columbia. Also featured is the two and three dimensional work of Lyon Forrest Hill whose work was recently recognized by both The Puppetry Journal and Juxtapoz magazine. Remembering the Little People, a clay installation by Jeremy Davis, will be moving from under foot at USC's McMaster School of Art to overhead at The Art Garage. The exhibit is rounded out by a fabric study series by Shana McCall; charcoal/pastel work by Deanna Leamon (recently featured at the Sumter, SC Accessibility exhibition): and the digital print work of Peyton Rowe.

The Art Garage is a for-profit art gallery, auction house, and studio community. While Columbia has a large number and variety of art galleries, they do not address a number of problems: limited gallery access for students; limited gallery access for non-traditional work (both content and form); limited public access to affordable original artwork; and limited availability to clean, safe affordable studio space. The facility has ten studio spaces available for rent.

Our solution to these problems is a wholly different attitude toward artists, artwork, and gallery space. The Art Garage is a retro, automotive-garage themed gallery in Columbia's Rosewood Warehouse District, near the State Fairgrounds in Columbia. The gallery is located at 728 S. Edisto Avenue, which runs parallel to Assembly Street. The lighting is florescent. We do not offer framing. The atmosphere is casual and entertaining. The focus is on the artwork, not proper attire and hardwood floors. We offer a community of support grounded in the gallery tradition although much of the work is non-traditional, at best. Many will claim... controversial. However, work exhibited at The Art Garage is strong by necessity; after all, it has the gallery with which to compete.

For more information check our SC Commercial Gallery listings or call Rachel Gibson at the gallery at 803/252-4ART (4278).
