Charleston Art Gallery and Portrait Studio in Charleston, SC, Celebrates First Anniversary

Charleston Art Gallery and Portrait Studio in Charleston, SC, is celebrating its first anniversary this month with an exhibition of new works by the twelve artists represented by the gallery. "I'm feeling very blessed," said Cecile Langham Cothran, gallery owner and portrait artist, whose working studio is in the gallery. "We've made it over that proverbial hump. The door opened in 2002 on Nov. 15, and we've grown stronger and stronger."

The artists represented by the gallery are from all over the Lowcountry, but their original art is remarkable by the variety of styles and media they employ. "I like to say our artists are hand picked," said Cothran. "I want this gallery to be a place where everyone who enters can make a connection with the art. Some pieces are meticulously representational, and some are thought provoking or emotion provoking, while others are delightfully whimsical."

The gallery location in the heart of the French Quarter Art District has proved to be all that Cothran expected. When the gallery opened last year, construction of condominiums on the waterfront had the other end of the one block long street dirty and full of equipment a lot of the time. "But we have a city parking garage across the street and we're only one door off East Bay, so I knew we would be visible," she said. "It's lovely now that the construction is finished."

We're on a street paved with Belgian Blocks, ballasts from the old merchant vessels that once docked where the Waterfront Park is now. At the end of the street, Charleston's beautiful new City Gallery at the Waterfront Park is now open, as are two more galleries on North Atlantic Wharf.

The anniversary show will continue through Dec, 2003.
