Nina Liu & Friends in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Jorge Vigil

Nina Liu and Friends in Charleston, SC, is presenting an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Peruvian artist Jorge Vigil. The exhibition will be on display through the holidays, closing on Dec. 31, 2003.

Vigil was born in Lima, Peru, where he studied art at the Estudió en la Escuela de Bellas Artes from 1983 through 1988. He later studied in France, where he now lives.

Vigil has had one-person exhibitions in galleries in Paris and Toulouse, among other French cities. He has had other one-person exhibitions in Lima, Peru; Jakarta, Indonesia; and Columbia, SC. Vigil has participated in group exhibitions in galleries in Argentina, France, Peru, and Belgium. The exhibition at Nina Liu and Friends is Vigil's first show in Charleston.

The paintings and drawings in the exhibition mix whimsy, irony, and eroticism. Their playfulness and complexity invite closer scrutiny that reveals layers of meaning, many of which are open to interpretation by the viewer.

Vigil combines painting and drawing in his works on canvas, producing surreal images that are reminiscent of Hieronymus Bosch's paintings. In several examples he punctuates muted colors with vibrant reds in flowers and droplets of blood. Vigil's drawings are delicate, complicated studies of human, animal, and plant forms that usually commingle to produce bizarre hybrids. The subtle coloring of the drawings enhances their dreamlike quality.
