Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, Features Works by Ortrud Tyler

A collection of oil paintings by Oak Island, NC, artist, Ortrud Tyler is being featured at Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, through the month of Dec., 2003. The exhibit, entitled, Coastal Living, reflects a return to what the artist calls her "painterly roots."

Tyler was born in Berlin, Germany, and studied with many prominent artists out of the German Expressionist Movement. After lengthy stays overseas with her military husband, the artist settled in North Carolina and continued her studies with a number of noted American artists including Maxine Masterfield and Alex Powers.

Although she originally worked in oil, it was for her abstract mixed media pieces that she has become best known.

Juried exhibitions include the Women's Center Annual Juried Exhibition in Durham, NC and the annual National Exhibition in Southport, NC. Tyler received a First Place Award at the 35th Annual Fine Art Show in Washington, NC, in addition to many other honors throughout her career.

Now Tyler finds herself in the enviable position of living on the Carolina coast and wants to paint her own environment in a more representational style. She said of her new collection, "I love paintings that tell a story about people and how they fit into their surroundings, whether it be crabbing in the creeks along the Waterway or at a basket stand along the highway. The Coastal Living paintings incorporate figures, an unusual departure for Tyler.

According to Sunset River Marketplace owner Ginny Lassiter, "This exhibit has been long awaited by our clients. Ortrud Tyler has a way with color. Her work is very popular with our gallery visitors."

Tyler is one of 150 artists all from North and South Carolina represented at Sunset River Marketplace. In addition to paintings, the work includes pottery, metalworks, blown glass, woodworking, jewelry and more.
