Carlton Opens New Gallery in Charleston, SC
Fifteen years ago, Elizabeth Carlton molded one of her very first
pieces of pottery - an exercise that also molded her distinct
technique and extraordinary artistry. 20,000+ pieces later, Carlton
has become one of the most recognizable artists in the south,
and her pottery can be found in over 20 stores across the US.
Capitalizing on this success, she recently opened a storefront
gallery in the heart of downtown Charleston, SC, at 85 Wentworth
Street, and intends to grow the product line even more over time.
"Even since I was in high school and in college, I recognized
an inner passion for sculpting and specifically for producing
whimsical pieces for collectors," stated Carlton. "Over
the last several years, I have worked hard to grow the collection,
to expand my scope and palette and to become a household product
for people who enjoy lively, vibrant and playful patterns. This
store allows me to take things one step further, as does my newly
launched web site at (www.elizabethcarlton.com). By making my
collection more readily available to collectors and to art lovers,
I can really offer a spectacular product."
In addition to her unique design and original product lines, Carlton
soars above most others with her personal approach to art. "Each
piece is hand-made, and each item is different from the one done
the time before. If someone wants something personalized, changed
a little or completely unique, I can make it happen."
Diverse in theme, Carlton's pottery showcases several dozen individually
handmade designs. Collectors favor the plates, pitchers, platters,
bowls and wine coolers, while visitors to her shop can not resist
the hand-painted tiles, household accessories, vases and lamps,
and animal figurines. Her repertoire includes the popular "nubby"
line, a series featuring hand-crafted balls decorated in various
styles-, the flower and bug line, the ocean line which highlights
mermaids, crabs and other sea creatures; the animal line with
flamingos, dogs, frogs and jungle animals; and the crown line
that is clean and elegant. Each piece, ranging from $15 to $350,
is hand-crafted and can be personalized for weddings, births and
other events.
Bright faces and ceramic pieces peer out of the sunny yellow freestanding
building on the corner of St. Philip and Wentworth Streets. Inside
this gallery, guests can find Carlton and a studio manager Danielle
Melchiorre designing new pieces each day. Complementing her style,
a handful of other artists will display their work and over time
Carlton hopes to expand their representation in her store. Parking
is plentiful and the gallery is located just blocks away from
the historic shopping district on King Street and the College
of Charleston.
