Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, Features Works by Studio 12

Linda Henderson

Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, is featuring a group exhibition by the artists of Studio 12 from Dec 1 - 31, 2004. The show, entitled, Eclectic Expressions, is a dynamic combination of media, style, color and subject matter - a reflection of each artist's personal statement. Media includes watercolor, oil, acrylic, collage, and one woodcut. Styles range from realistic to abstract.

Founded by watercolor artist Jill Hope, Studio 12 is a diverse group of 12 artists from North and South Carolina who meet every Tuesday at the gallery to paint, share, support, and critique each other's work. Said Hope, "We cherish this time to be together and to further develop our artistic abilities. We are grateful that Sunset River Marketplace has provided us a remarkable studio space in which we can create art."

The group consists of 11 woman and 1 man: Carole Barth, Linda Henderson, Jill Hope, Bryan Krpejs, Babs Ludwick, Shauna McGoldrick, Rosabel Nerlino (aka Sally Nolan), Roberta Pinson, Mary Kay Riedy, Barbara Stallings, Marsha Thomas and Nancy Wickstrom.

At Studio 12, novices and experienced artists work side by side. Members of the group have been honored by their peers with an impressive array of awards that include Best in Show, First Place, Second Place, Third Place and a number of Honorable Mentions, and Merit Awards.

All of the artists support and contribute to the arts in some way. All belong to Waterway Art Association and the Brunswick Arts Council. Shauna McGoldrick is Waterway's current president and Nancy Wickstrom serves as vice president. Jill Hope is a past president, and others serve on various committees. Ginny Lassiter, who owns Sunset River Marketplace with her husband, Joe, said, "We are very happy to have Studio 12 at the gallery. Our customers love watching them as they work. This show is especially interesting because it gives us insight into the group - as artists and as people."

Sunset River Marketplace has become a center for the arts in Brunswick County. In its 11,000 square-foot space, the works of more than 200 artists, all from either North or South Carolina, are on display. The gallery also offers ongoing art classes for adults and children, workshops by nationally known artists and on-site custom framing services. Sunset River pottery students and local potters take advantage of the gallery's two on-site kilns.
