Joie Lassiter Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Marc Lambrechts and Joe Walters

Joie Lassiter Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting the exhibits: Marc Lambrechts: Sediments, and Joe Walters: Selected Works. Both exhibitions will be on view from Dec. 2 through Jan. 5, 2006.

Marc Lambrechts

Lambrechts began his career as an etcher, and his skill with the engraving tool is still evident in his firm yet delicate lines, his confident incising and mastery of his paintings' surfaces. His paintings suggest architectural grids in dialogue with the romance of nature, in these works from and inspired by Bali nature plays a more dominant role than in previous works. Lambrechts paints on a dry plaster surface and in the Bali pieces he incorporates banana leaves and bark taking elements directly from his natural surroundings, imbuing his work with rich colors and connotations. He combines an intricate handling of line with a textured layering of surfaces, which appear like geological strata. As art critic Alice Gray writes, Lambrechts "fuses the traditions of post-minimalist geometry and expressionist gesture."

Lambrechts has lived in New York for the last twenty years. He studied at the St Lucas Institute in Brussels, Belgium and at the Pratt Art Institute in New York City. He has exhibited in many places around the world, including New York, North Carolina, Atlanta, GA, Washington DC, San Francisco, Barcelona, Spain, Strasbourg, Germany, Amsterdam, Canada, and Belgium.

Joe Walters

Joe Walters: Selected Works includes a combination of Walter's sculpture and works on paper. His wall sculpture includes representations of flora and fauna configured into a loose grid. Reflected in their arrangement is the idea is that each plant, insect, mammal or fish be given equal importance; "no single species is more significant than the other." The wall sculptures are constructed of clay, wire, and pigment.

Walters is also known for his works on paper in which the image is imbedded into the fibers with tea and bleach. Evidence of process and accidental marks can be seen, creating a tension between "control and happenstance." The organic quality of the work reflects the imagery which is dominated by trees and other botanical subjects.

In all his works there is an unearthed quality likely due to the Walters' interest in archeology. The encrusted appearance of the sculpture and tea-stained works on paper possess an integrity and elegance that come with age. This contributes to undertones of scientific study and the relationship between man and nature.

Work by Walters is included in public and private collections throughout the United States and exhibited widely throughout the southeast, Florida and New York.
