Deborah Palmer

All that is the essence of coastal living in the low country is represented in the show Tidelines & Coastal Vignettes by artist Deborah Palmer; images of Charleston Harbor, Shem Creek, windswept beaches, dramatic skies and marsh from Sullivans Island to Seabrook and the ACE Basin. Most of the paintings are oil on panel completed "en plein air", on location in Palmer's neo-impressionistic style, but with a fresh perspective and an emphasis on light and shadow which are her trademarks. "Painting outdoors can be daunting." says Palmer. "It forces me to paint fast and loose to capture scudding cloud patterns, ever-changing light and shadows and falling tides. It is a challenge that I enjoy."

This exhibition marks Palmer's third anniversary as a regular exhibitor at the Spencer Art Gallery. Since returning to her painting in 2000 after 30 years in the commercial art world, she has become an exhibiting member of the Charleston and Mt. Pleasant Artist Guilds and the Artist's Alliance of East Hampton, has won numerous awards in juried shows, and has had several pieces commissioned from patrons both in Charleston and the New York area. Palmer is a member of the Charleston Outdoor Painters Association (COPA). Her work has been exhibited at Guild Hall in Easthampton, NY, the Art Center in Pelham, NY, the Sandpiper Gallery on Sullivan's Island, and at the North Charleston City Gallery.
