Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Daryl Knox

Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibition entitled, Lowcountry Moods, featuring work by well-known Charleston artist Daryl Knox. The show will run Dec. 1 through 31, 2006.

Knox's award-winning pastels and oils have been exhibited in juried shows throughout the southeast and is in private collections throughout the United States. He studied art at Northern Kentucky University and printmaking at Western Kentucky University. Knox now limits his artistic endeavor to painting originals in oil and pastel, and is no longer involved in printmaking.

When Knox talks about his painting, he has this to say, "Although I sometimes use photographs for references, I include no artifacts from the modern world, and I strive more for the mood and the ambiance of the landscape than the duplication of the grass and clouds of a specific location or day. While working, I know what the physical image looks like, but I am never sure exactly what the finished product will be. It is the mystery of reflection, light and shadow and nuances of color that make me want to paint the landscapes of the Lowcountry. I could paint the same marshside spot for several days and have many different finished paintings. The moods of Charleston marshes change from day to day and hour to hour and I am constantly challenged to capture them. My intent to entice the viewer to linger long enough to see beyond the blades of grass and the wispy clouds and to feel the heart of the marsh."

Knox also adds, "I try to articulate the quiet beauty of the Lowcountry of South Carolina. I look for areas that are relatively undisturbed by man and am drawn to those views that are compelling in their austerity. I think that my painting reveals more about how I respond to the light and the atmosphere of the marshes and creeks than any specific place that I paint. I am perpetually awed by the colors, textures and patterns that exist in nature and how they are altered by the seasons and the passage of time."

Knox begins his paintings with no end product in mind. He prefers to build the painting with layers of colors and to explore the potential of the canvas and paper as he works. He works alternately in pastel and oil, depending on the perceived mood of the landscape.
