Artists' Guild of Spartanburg in Spartanburg, SC, Features Works by Kristofer and Scott Neely

The Artists' Guild of Spartanburg in Spartanburg, SC, will present the exhibit, Life Breaks Open, featuring works by Kristofer and Scott Neely, on view in the Guild's Gallery at the Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg, SC, on view from Dec. 1 - 31, 2008.

The Neely brothers draw on visual traditions as varied as American street and folk art, German expressionism, Christian icons, Zen ensos and minimalism to create images of grief and birth.

Featured works on wood and paper include Scott Neely's tears and gratia plena and Kristofer Neely's Guardians and Synapse Series.

Kristopher Neely

"A seminary drop-out, in my body of work I struggle frequently with my Southern Baptist roots, my Episcopal confirmation and my long-standing personal investigation of the roles of pastors, priests and prophets. More and more, I am drawn toward ancient lines of mystic teachers as spiritual mentors and sources of questions that surface in my work," Kristofer Neely, Director of the Success Initiative at Wofford College, says of the inspiration for his experimentation with traditional materials and found objects.

"I splatter, slash, slather and scrape surfaces with an energy that is meant to linger with the work. In this vein, I consider my time in the studio to be a manual act of contemplative prayer," adds Kristofer Neely.

Scott Neely

Scott Neely, Director of Mission at First Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg, creates works in a range of media, including writing, painting and printmaking. "Life Breaks Open includes small drawings, prints and paintings on themes of pain and birth which he describes as "visual poems: succinct, present, ambiguous," says Scott Neely.

The artist has also led literary and visual collaborative projects on issues of diversity, race, and religious pluralism, most recently as the Writer-in-Residence for Spartanburg Regional Foundation's Healing Arts program in 2006-07.
