Hampton III Gallery in Taylors, SC, Features Works by Leo TwiggsHampton III Gallery in Taylors, SC, Features Works by Leo Twiggs

Hampton III Gallery in Taylors, SC, is presenting the exhibit, Targeted Man, featuring a new series of paintings by Leo Twiggs, on view through Dec. 31, 2008. The events that took place on 9/11 have inspired this series.

Dr. Twiggs states, "September 11, 2001 has changed the way we Americans see the world. Until that day we thought that we were safe from such attacks, that somehow these kinds of atrocities happened 'over there'. Then the news of suicide bombers walking into crowds and blowing them up added to our fears."

Twiggs adds, "The paranoia associated with these incidents has made us a different people in many respects. Now we look at the people around us differently, suspiciously. Who is the enemy? Who is friend or foe? We are all targeted and this has become an international crisis. We call it terrorism and it is this sinister ambiguity I began exploring two years ago in the series Targeted Man."

After receiving degrees from Clafton College, NYU, and at the University of Georgia, Dr. Twiggs developed the art curriculum at SC State University, in Orangeburg, SC, where he taught for many years. Now in retirement he continues to explore his ideas through the unique medium of batik.
