Hawthorne Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, Features Works by Lea Lackey-Zachmann and Carl Galie

Hawthorne Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, is featuring works by two Winston-Salem artists, Lea Lackey-Zachmann (paintings) and Carl Galie (color photographs), on view through Jan. 10, 2009.

Lea Lackey-Zachman

Lea Lackey-Zachman is a painter and art instructor at High Point University. She has a Master of Fine Arts in painting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a bachelor of Arts from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. She exhibits paintings and prints throughout the Southeast.

Lackey-Zachman has developed this series of paintings by magnifying microscopic images of various flowers. The image is made by placing a tiny bit of plant material on a slide, which is then enlarged on a computer monitor. A search for the right "landscape of flower" ensues as she explores the detailed natural compositions that result in a surprising variety of beautiful abstract patterns. It is from the black and white photographs that inspiration comes for color decisions and compositional choices. The symbolic, sensory and aesthetic properties of flowers and their corresponding depiction is a topic artists have considered throughout history. The annals of art offer a myriad of avenues and interpretations of flowers; here Lackey-Zachman offers her interpretation of roses, blue salvia and others that result in beautiful abstractions.

Carl V. Galie, Jr.

Carl Galie is a Winston-Salem photographer who continues to create work in the natural landscapes of North Carolina. Galie is well aware of the distances some photographers are willing to travel to capture images from exotic lands. He chose to do the exact opposite, and the result is a lovely and moving pictorial monograph entitled 175 Paces.

Inspired by the writings of Thoreau and Emerson - and the simplistic beauty they experienced at Walden Pond in the mid-19th Century - Galie set out two years ago to create an entire photographic book filled with images captured within 175 paces from his friends' cabin home.

"In my travels over the past 17 years as a photographer and teacher," Galie says, "the most common statement I've heard aspiring photographers make is 'there is nothing here to photograph.' I hope to be able to dispel that myth with this project."

Created over a two-year period, the book's photographs include a dazzling array of subjects from panoramic scenes of fall foliage reflected in a pond's morning haze to the winged flurry of a lone dragonfly perched on a singular offshoot of a wildflower. The project's 24-month timeframe allowed Galie to document the four seasons and the wildlife and landscape unique to the changing time of year. The pictures have a spiritual quality to them, inspiring the reader with a tangible sense of peace and tranquility.

Intertwining quotes from Thoreau and Emerson with stunning photographs of geese skimming to a stop on the early morning pond, Galie indeed proves that the poetic quality of nature is all around us. His message of simplicity in the midst of today's fast-paced world is a welcome reminder that there is much to be seen and appreciated within our own 175-pace slice of Earth.

Galie's work has been used in numerous publications including Outdoor magazine, Backpacker magazine and advertisements by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, RJR Nabisco, National Geographic's Scenic Highways and Byways, and many more. In 2007, he was awarded a Regional Artist grant from the Winston-Salem, Forsyth County Arts Council, and the North Carolina Arts Council for this second book project which will be available at Hawthorne Gallery.

Hawthorne Gallery and Idlewild House share 7,000 square feet of space at the historic property on Fourth Street in the West End of Winston-Salem. The building was home originally designed by Pennsylvania architect Charles Barton Keene of Reynolda House fame. The two businesses have created a destination for art and design. Interior vignettes accent the gallery spaces featuring original artwork.
