Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Marek Ranis and Art Students

Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC, is presenting two new exhibits including: Albedo (Whiteness), featuring works by Marek Ranis, on view in the Ross Gallery through Jan. 12, 2012. A reception will be held on Dec. 1, from 5-7pm. The exhibit, CPCC Ceramics and Drawing Student Invitational is on view in the Pease Gallery, through Jan. 3, 2012.

Ranis is a sculptor, installation and video artist, photographer, painter and public art artist. He has won numerous grants and residencies and exhibited internationally extensively. His work and research focuses on environmental, social and political issues. Ranis is currently an Assistant Professor of Sculpture at UNC-C and is represented by The New Gallery Of Modern Art in Charlotte, NC.

Ranis’ current body of work, Albedo (Whiteness), was triggered by his interest in global climate change. He was compelled to focus on this phenomenon not just because of the acuteness and extent of related events, but because we seem not to comprehend it. The images of icebergs and glacial ice are a way to express a sense of loss and melancholy about the disappearing polar landscapes, which many of us will never see.

CPCC’s Pease Gallery is hosting the exhibition, CPCC Ceramics and Drawing Student Invitational, featuring the best student work from the ceramics and drawing classes. This is a very select group of students.

Participating in the exhibit are: Amy Berlak, Betsy Birkner, David Clark, Matthew Dinsmore, Randella Foster, Cameo Garrison, Christina Hall, Leanne Harrison, Leah Humphries, Helen Huntley, Madelyn Knowland-Conlee, Brandon Lamie, Ida Lee, Samantha Locklear, Mary Jane McKnight, Jodi McNeely, Joe Navarra, Shannon Radigan, Gary Rubin, Sherry Yu, and Kelly Ann Ziegler.

Gallery Coordinators, Erika Diamond and Alyssa Wood, curated the exhibition.
