Here's a Carolina Arts Update! 7/22/05

erl originals gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, is now closed. The following is no reflection on the artist(s) mentioned in this article. They still deserve the historical fact that this exhibition happened.

Here is an excerpt from an article in the Winston-Salem Journal's Dec. 10, 2004, edition: "In late September, (2004) erl's owners, Peter and Lee Swenson, and the company they operate, Bogart Management Group, were foreclosed on by their bank. They were barred from their gallery at 480 West End Blvd. for being months in arrears on rent and utilities. Peter Swenson is facing numerous tax-fraud charges, as well as a growing number of civil lawsuits filed by creditors seeking to collect payments they say are long overdue".

Oil Paintings, Metal and Ceramic Vessels on Display at e.r.l originals in Winston-Salem, NC

Colorful oil paintings by renowned artist Carolyn Goldsmith and metal and ceramic vessels by the collaborative team of Yvonne Hegney and Thom Kittredge will be on display at e.r.l. originals in Winston-Salem, NC, through Mar. 22.

Goldsmith, a Florida native who lives and works in Alabama, paints figures in oil on canvas in an unconfined, free style.

"My work is a visible expression of the expectancy with which I relate and respond to the world," Goldsmith explains. "My paintings are the vehicle through which I address our common struggle to make sense of our existence, our place in the world, and our relationship to God."

Born in Gainesville, FL, Goldsmith graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, MO, and continued her studies in art at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL, and The University of the South, in Sewanee, TN. She exhibits primarily in Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Georgia where her works are part of numerous corporate collections, such as architects Adams, Peacher, Keeton, Cosby, Inc. in Birmingham; Paul W. Bryant, Jr. Conference Center at the University of Alabama; Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery; and Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.

Goldsmith has had numerous solo exhibitions, most recently at the Monty Stabler Galleries in Birmingham and Bennett Galleries in Nashville. Her works have also been on display in group exhibitions across Georgia and Alabama.

Yvonne Hegney and Thorn Kittredge collaborate together to produce unusual hand-built, pit-fired metal and ceramic vessels. Their original works of art can be found in collections of individuals and businesses alike across the United States.

"We both feel great affinity with nature and organic construction and texture, while our interest in ancient cultures adds dimension to our work with a sense of encrusted agelessness," Hegney says. "We create in a collaborative effort."

Hegney uses clay to convey a tactile message of sumptuous three-dimensionality, and Kittredge, through the process of pit firing, adds color and depth to each piece. They then marry the finished form of clay with found objects of metal, wood, and rock to incorporate all in a synergistic evocation of timeless transcendence.

Born in Tarrytown, NY, Hegney attended Alabama A&M University and the University of Alabama, Huntsville, where she received her BA in fine arts. She also studied ceramics under Hiroshi Sueyushi and Traudi Thornton, and the Svenska Konst Verkstaden, Stockholm, Sweden, and has worked as a set decorator for both stage and film production.

Kittredge, a native of Roseland, NJ, attended the New School for Social Research in New York City and worked as a chef and construction contractor before entering the art field. Both he and Hegney have traveled extensively to study the art and artifacts of ancient cultures.
