Here's a Carolina Arts Update! 7/22/05

erl originals gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, is now closed. The following is no reflection on the artist(s) mentioned in this article. They still deserve the historical fact that this exhibition happened.

Here is an excerpt from an article in the Winston-Salem Journal's Dec. 10, 2004, edition: "In late September, (2004) erl's owners, Peter and Lee Swenson, and the company they operate, Bogart Management Group, were foreclosed on by their bank. They were barred from their gallery at 480 West End Blvd. for being months in arrears on rent and utilities. Peter Swenson is facing numerous tax-fraud charges, as well as a growing number of civil lawsuits filed by creditors seeking to collect payments they say are long overdue".

Works by Prominent Ceramic Artist, Acrylic Painter, Local Photographer to be Featured at erl in February

Colorful vessels by internationally known artist Cheryl Williams and acrylic oil paintings of scenes from the South of France by up-and-coming artist David Nance will be on display in the main gallery at e.r.l. originals in Winston-Salem, NC, Feb. 9 - Mar. 28. In addition, underwater photography and Piedmont landscapes by area photographer Bob Dalton will be on exhibit in e.r.l's "Gallery G"

Cheryl Williams, who has worked as an independent studio artist for more than a decade, attended the San Francisco Art Institute and City College, San Francisco, and currently lives in Oregon. Her creations - simple forms executed in intense colors - are part of numerous permanent collections. Among them is the White House Collection of American Craft, which features her "Prayer Bowls," brilliant and luminous vessels with gold interiors and roughly textured exteriors. Her work is also in the permanent collections of the Charles A. Wustum Museum, Wisconsin; MCI Telecommunications; Sallie May Foundation; the former 1st Lady of Russia, Naina Yelstin; the 1st Lady of Ukraine, Liudmyla Kuchma; the 1st Lady of France, Bernadette Chirac; former President of the Philippines, Fidel Ramos; Johannesburg Grand Hyatt Hotel, South Africa; Takeshiba Intercontinental Hotel, Tokyo Bay; and the Swiss Hotel in Atlanta.

"The vessels I'm creating are inspired by my teacher - the teacher who resides in me. The gold leaf on these vessels expresses the inner light, which dwells in all of us. The effect is that rare balance of beauty that puts me in touch with myself," Williams explains.

Williams has also been featured in numerous publications, such as Ceramics Monthly, Smithsonian Magazine, and House Beautiful.

Nance, a graduate of North Carolina State University's School of Design, apprenticed with well-known artist Charles Sweitzer during the painting of the Richard Nixon Library mural. He spent last summer painting in the South of France, and these acrylics will be featured in the exhibit. During the past six years, his works have been displayed in numerous exhibitions, most recently including shows at the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce, Babcock Law Center, Alamance County Arts Council, Caswell County Civic Center, Theatre Art Gallery in High Point, and Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill.

Photography by Robert Dalton will be on exhibit in Gallery G. Dalton's artwork features underwater photos taken at dive sites in the Caribbean. Also on display will be photos of landscapes from the Piedmont area. A Winston-Salem native, Dalton earned a BS in biology, and after a year of graduate school in marine biology, turned to photography as a career. A professional commercial photographer in High Point for 25 years, he earned a master of photography from the Professional Photographers of America.

"I hope that through my photography," Dalton says, "people will see the beauty and fragility of nature and help to conserve it for future generations to enjoy."
