The Butts of Charleston ?? at Tiemakers Gallery in Charleston, SC

.A new moon is rising over the marshscapes of Charleston. Local photographer, David Edwards, is bringing some cheeky, contemporary art to Charleston with his latest project, appropriately titled, The Butts of Charleston. The exhibit will take place at Tiemaker's Gallery in Charleston, SC, from Feb. 16 through Apr. 14.

The Butts of Charleston celebrates the artistic and alternative spirit of Charleston and incorporates the participation of fellow Charlestonians. Edwards' idea springs from the cliché of posters boasting the doors, windows, gates, and even the gardens of Charleston. He wanted to portray more of the modern heart and soul of Charleston, with a realistic and artistic edge. Edward's Butts are artfully photographed, each a little differently, using black and white photography. The result is a beautiful assembly of, well, cheeks of all types, all around the Charleston area.

The project has been ongoing for several years and has only been possible with the participation of lots of volunteers. Over the past year, Edwards has been advertising in the City Paper for volunteers, and the process of recruiting the butts is as much a part of the project as the final product.

One of the highlights of finding Charleston butts occurred when a woman called in from the ad and offered to pose. After learning more about the project, she suggested that she could ask her mother and grandmother to join her, for a three generational photograph. Although the daughter who called in could not make it for the appointment, her sister volunteered, bringing along her mother and grandmother of more than 80 years! The three commented to Edwards, "We like to surprise people. And we don't take ourselves too seriously." What more can we say?

Come and see Charleston like you've never seen it before!... Just bring your sense of humor. Posters featuring the best of The Butts of Charleston will be available.

Along with this exhibition by David Edwards, Tiemakers will also feature new works by Emily Jenkins, Matt Overend, and Dorothy Doubleday.
