Tryon Arts Center in Tryon, NC, Features Works by Carol Bomer

Tryon Painters and Sculptors in Tryon, NC, will host an exhibit by Carol Bomer at the Tryon Fine Arts Center, Gallery One. The exhibit will be on view from Feb. 4 through Feb. 27.

Bomer, a native of Alberta, Canada, now lives in Asheville, NC, with her husband and two children. She has worked professionally as a painter since 1976, and has had over 30 solo shows in North Carolina, Indiana, Iowa, Tennessee, Georgia and Kansas. Recently she has been invited to teach painting at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, and in May she will be traveling to Kiev, where she will be working with a Kiev artist to produce an exhibit of their combined work.

Bomer works in all mediums, including watercolor, pastel, acrylic, and oil, as well as three-dimensional mixed-media sculpture and installations. Her recent work is mostly mixed media, an ongoing series combining collage of various papers, low relief, impasto, gold leaf, acrylics, wax, and varnishes. Images from past Christian imagery are placed on non-objective grounds or manipulated in other ways. The Scriptures are the source of her ideas and inspiration. She signs her work SOLI DEO GLORIA - to God alone be the Glory, which is also the name of her Asheville studio.

Her work, abstract and gestural, has been called "a silent form of poetry." But she is equally at home with representational art, filling many portrait and landscape commissions.
