UNC-Charlotte Presents Major Ceramics Exhibit in Three Galleries for NCECA in Charlotte, NC

Nine nationally prominent artists will present ceramic sculpture and installations in a major exhibition that will fill UNC-Charlotte's three largest galleries: Rowe Arts Gallery, Cone Center Gallery, and Storrs Architecture Gallery, through Mar. 31. The exhibition, Beyond the Physical: Substance, Space and Light, is being presented in conjunction with the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts organization's Thirty-fifth Annual Conference, being held in Charlotte, NC, Mar. 28-31.

Beyond the Physical: Substance, Space and Light, will feature contemporary and innovative work that challenges traditional notions about the historic art form of ceramics, project director Joan Tweedy says.

"The Southeastern United States has never before been home to a ceramic sculpture and installation exhibition of this magnitude," according to Tweedy, a UNC-Charlotte assistant professor of art and coordinator of ceramics at the University.

Artists whose work is being presented in the exhibition are: Tori Arpad, assistant professor of art/ceramics at Florida International University, Miami; Bill Gilbert, associate professor of art/ceramics, University of New Mexico; Juan Granados, assistant professor of art/ceramics, Texas Tech University; Roberta Griffith, Arkell Hall Foundation Professor of Art, Hartwick College; Rebecca Hutchinson, assistant professor of ceramics, Virginia Commonwealth University; Yves Pacquette, assistant professor of art/ceramics, Savannah College of Art; Denise Pelletier, assistant professor of art/ceramics, Connecticut College, New London, CT; Virginia Scotchie, assistant professor of art/ceramics, University of South Carolina; and Nan Smith, professor of art and head of ceramics, University of Florida. Nan Smith is also the curator for this exhibition.

A catalogue will be produced to document this exhibition containing contributions from Dr. Glen R. Brown, PhD, Associate Professor of Art History at Kansas State University, Manhattan; and Ron Glowen, an independent arts writer from Seattle, WA.

Several lectures and receptions will be held in March at the Mint Museum of Craft + Design and the UNC-Charlotte Uptown Center. The events are free and open to the public. For information call Joan Tweedy at 704/687-4459.

Beyond the Physical: Substance, Space and Light is sponsored by UNC-Charlotte, North Carolina Arts Council, Standard Ceramics, Carolina Clay Connection, Mint Museum of Craft + Design, and Axner Ceramics.

UNC-Charlotte will also present two exhibitions from Mar. 5 - 31. The exhibition, Ceramics by Faculty Past and Present, will take place in the Rowe Upstairs Gallery and Ceramics by Students Past and Present, will be at the Cone Center Wall Gallery.
