Carolina Creations in New Bern, NC, Features Works by Justine Ferreri

Carolina Creations in New Bern, NC, is presenting an exhibition entitled, Characters in Clay, by NC clay sculptor Justine Ferreri. The exhibit will be on view from Feb. 8 through Mar. 8, 2002.

Ferreri is well known for her wild and wonderful creations including The Three Wise Women, whimsical clocks, mermaids, prayer angels and boxes. Her work is bright, cheerful and sure to bring a smile to your face.

She has dedicated her life to art in one form or another. In her early years Ferreri was in the performing arts; twelve years of classical ballet and four years in music, guitar, folk singing and musical theater. The past seven years have been spent in the visual arts. Ferreri was born in Japan, and has lived in many areas of the United States. She attended Stockton State College, NJ; Central Piedmont College and UNC Charlotte.

Self taught in clay, Ferreri doesn't know about negative space and wasn't taught not to use purple and orange on the same piece, consequently her work has no boundaries. She hand or slab builds each piece using earthenware and stoneware clays, then adds a variety of finishes; oxides, under glazes, terra sigllatas and lusters. She then glazes the pieces three or four times to get her vibrant colors and later adds decoration with enamels and beads.

Ferreri considers herself a caricature sculptor and healer and uses humor, spiritual messages or old fables for her inspiration. By generating an emotional response in the viewer, she thinks the piece becomes the outward manifestation of an inner need of the viewer.

Ferreri strives for feeling, emotion and personality, sometimes enlarging or emphasizing parts to stress emotion or character. She wants her art to be very personal and in making it gives a small part of herself with each piece.

Ferreri shows her work throughout the southeastern US, has received two Emerging Artists Grants from the North Carolina Arts Council. She has installations in UNC Wilmington's King's Hall and in Rose Spices Corporate Offices and has won many awards.

Carolina Creations represents over 100 North Carolina artists along with many nationally known artists working in every medium.
