USC-Beaufort Gallery in Beaufort, SC, Present Exhibition by Women

An art exhibition opens at the USC-Beaufort Gallery in Beaufort, SC, on Feb. 9. Titled She: A Celebration of Women and Art, the exhibition assembles the work of 13 women artists. Sponsored by The Arts Council of Beaufort County, the show runs through Feb. 15, 2002.

The artists included in the exhibition are Elizabeth Adams, Carol Barks, Pat Callahan, Shelby Duensing, Gina Gartner, Janette Grassi, Ann Hubbard, Mariah Kirby-Smith, Doni Jordan, Gina Langston, Amanda McGuire, Heather Metcalfe and Ursula Pallares. Each of the participants in She explores a personal vocabulary in her art or pursues a unique form for expression.

She was originally created in March of 2000 by Columbia, SC, artists Janette Grassi and Doni Jordan in celebration of Women's History Month. Ten women artists participated in the exhibition held at Gallery 80808 in Vista Studios in Columbia. Eight of the original artists are returning for this year's show and there are four new artists: Elizabeth Adams of Columbia, Mariah-Kirby Smith of Camden, SC, and Gina Gartner, Amanda McGuire and Heather Metcalfe of Beaufort.

This year's exhibition is organized by Gina Gartner and Doni Jordan, and assembles the work of both visual and performance artists fulfilling Grassi's and Jordan's original dream. The show opens in conjunction with the second annual performance of The Vagina Monologues, written by Obie award winner Eve Ensler and performed by members of Wild Women Productions and directed by Louise Trask. The Vagina Monologues is presented in conjunction with V-Day which was established in 1998 to benefit groups that work to stop the violence against women and girls. Proceeds of the performance of The Vagina Monologues benefit Citizens Opposed to Domestic Abuse and the Rape Crisis Center. Call the Arts Council of Beaufort County at 843/521-4145 to purchase tickets for the performance.
