February Issue 2003

Christa Faut Gallery in Cornelius, NC, Features Works by J.M. Henry

In J.M. Henry's second solo show at Christa Faut Gallery in Cornelius, NC, he is introducing the Flora series, a series of mixed media paintings begun in late 2001. The exhibition will be on view from Feb. 1- 28th, 2003.

Readers familiar with his White Paintings (1999-2001) will find several similarities; a limited palette, elements of pattern and repetition, and spare imagery placed in carefully developed surfaces. In the Flora series, however, the palette has darkened, and a larger chromatic range and more accessible imagery gives this series a decidedly warmer feel.

The piece featured on the show announcement is titled Bloom/Fable and is a square painting on thick Waterford watercolor paper. A chaotic cluster of leaves and stems dominates the foreground, and from - or maybe behind - this cluster rises a long fragmented stem that ends in a luminous white 'bloom' that runs through the top of the composition. The rich surface is built up in oil with encaustic and contains evidence of false starts, of unrelated drawings. This layering of images and emphasis on mark-making is very characteristic of Henry's work.

"The marks from these transitional states remain, and produce a complex and fertile materiality that cannot be obtained by any other means. The sum of these remnants form an abstract matrix that contrasts or complements the representational elements of my composition," says Henry.

Henry has a BFA from State University of New York at Albany, and is showing with a half dozen galleries in the Southeast and in New York State. His work is in numerous private and corporate collections, and he has recently been awarded a North Carolina Regional Arts Grant to produce a catalogue for another solo show later this year.
