Arts United for Davidson County in Lexington, NC, Offers Major Quilt Exhibit Covering 150 Years

Arts United for Davidson County presents the exhibition, 150 Years of North Carolina Quilts, at the Arts Center in Uptown Lexington, NC. The exhibition sponsored by LSB The Bank will be on view through Mar. 26, 2003. The exhibit will feature 102 quilts made in North Carolina over the past 150 years. These are not all showpiece quilts; they " have been used, and in some cases, abused." It is a tribute to the creativity and skill of North Carolina women.

The glory of the exhibit lies within the rich variety of patterns and materials. The quilts were purchased, in most cases, directly from the quilters or family members by Dr. Everette James and stories are presented with the exhibit. Booklets of the exhibit will also be available for purchase.

This collection was organized by the Gallery of Art & Design at NC State University and is a gift to the University in memory of Pattie Royster James, by her son, Dr. A. Everette James, Jr. and his wife, Dr. Nancy J. Farmer.

"Not too long ago, a used handmade quilt might have been relegated to the back of the linen closet. Made by a member of the family, it could not be given away because it was worn and faded In the front parlor another quilt might have graced the end of the sofa. It was a show quilt thus retaining its pristine nature as an object of display," says Dr. Charlotte Vestal Brown, Director of the Gallery of Art & Design. " We... treat both quilts with a deep and abiding respect not only for their value as documents of a shared and cherished past but also because the activity of quilt making continues with great vitality today."
