Dog Art Dealer in Charleston, SC, Offers Exhibition of Works by Portraitists of the Sporting Breeds

Dog Art Dealer in Charleston, SC, will be exhibiting works by the finest commissioned portraitist of the sporting breeds for the throngs of dog loving art enthusiast attending the 23rd Southeastern Wildlife Expo, taking place in Charleston Feb. 18-20, 2005. The artists featured paint representational commissioned work of national and international importance. "I believe a painting should enable the person viewing it to have some idea of the period the piece was produced," says Jaynie Milligan-Spector owner of Dog Art Dealer. In featuring Robert Christie, Beth Carlson, Bee Booth, Faith Semmes, and Nancy Pellatt the gallery will showcase their finest portraitists of the sporting breeds.

Robert Christie

Robert Christie has become one of the best known dog and sporting artists in the south. He studied fine art at the Pratt Institute in New York. Intending to become a commercial illustrator Christie got "bitten" by the dog when a publisher in New York, impressed by his considerable talent, asked him to do a series of hunting dog paintings for his print market, and he has been painting them ever since. Along with painting, he has spent over twenty years training, field training, and hunt testing and showing his German shorthairs.

Beth Carlson

Beth Carlson's gift with charcoal and oil equine and canine portrait paintings has made her the choice of many animal lovers across the country. Because of her extensive background with animals, she consistently captures the individual personality as well as the physical characteristics of her subject. Carlson has studied with Werner Rentsch, President of the American Academy of Equine Art, Sam Savitt, once the official artist for the United States Equestrian Team, Robert Abbett, the renowned sporting dog artist, and Daniel Greene, one of America's leading portrait painters. She is also a member of the Portrait Society of America. Carlson's paintings have graced the covers of The Pointing Dog, Gray's Sporting Journal and The Chronicle of the Horse. Throughout her life she has successfully trained and shown horses and dogs to numerous championships at state, regional and countrywide levels.

The naturalist Bee Booth is possibly the most romantic of the artists on exhibit. Booth comes from a background of hunting and showing her own dogs. Her ability to capture the expression and the soul of the animal by looking into its eyes is unparalleled. Both the pet owner and the outside viewer will agree that each painting could be considered a master piece, today and certainly in the future.

Nancy Pellatt having studied with two founding members of the American Academy of Equine Art has earned herself a name in the fine art world. Her refreshingly pragmatic renditions of animals have gained her national publicity on the cover of several prominent equestrian magazines and a place in numerous museums and galleries across the nation. Pellatt is a Carolina resident and a member of one of the country's oldest womens' art clubs. Her artwork offers a classically styled keepsake of your pet.

Faith Cameron Semmes' paintings are beautifully executed, and like all of the artists work we represent at our gallery she comments, "Whether I paint people alone or with their animals one thing remains constant: I like my portraits to tell a story even if it's a short one." Semmes has lived in Charleston since 1993 and presently resides with three dogs and two cats in a barn loft on Johns Island. Her subjects reflect her love of animals and bucolic country life.
