February Issue 2005

Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC, Features Photography Exhibition

The Elizabeth Stone Harper Gallery at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC, is presenting the exhibition, Earth and Memory: African and African American Photography, presented by guest curator Craig Bunting. The exhibit will be on view through Mar. 3, 2005.

Seydou Keïta

Artists participating in the exhibition are Seydou Keïta, Philip Kwame Apagya, Samuel Fosso, Zwelethu Mthethwa, Malick Sidibe, Olu Oguibe, Sheila Pree-Bright, Lyle Ashton Harris and Carrie Mae Weems.

If the self-identifying themes of ancestral history, colonialism and post-colonialism are apparent in contemporary African photography and are documented through photographic portraits taken in fantastic settings, then the bar is raised when we study the last two decades of African-American photography. By questioning long-held beliefs about racial and gender definitions and examining complex questions about like ethnic purity and cultural assimilation, these artists impel us to make their question our own and press us to become both subject and the observer.

Special thanks goes out the the following galleries and individuals providing works for this exhibition: Jack Shainman Gallery, New York; Gagosian Gallery, New York; PPOW Gallery, New York; CRG Gallery, New York; Dr. Koan-Jeff Baysa; and Constance Colman.

Also plan to attend the annual Arnold Symposium schedule during the exhibition. The subject is, African Americans and the Media. Lectures and dates are: Mar. 1, at 11am, Juan Williams; Mar. 1, at 7:30pm, Jesse Jackson; and Mar. 2, at 11am, Morris Dees.

Craig Bunting, guest curator of the exhibition will give a lecture on the exhibit on Mar. 1, 2005, at 4pm.

This exhibit has been in support by the Russell Committee of Presbyterian College.
