Robert Lange Studios, Fine Art Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Wade Lawrence

Black and white meets color in a special limited edition series of photos entitled, Now & Then: Photographs by Wade Lawrence, representing some of the best work by photographer Wade Lawrence. The photos in this commemorative boxed set can be viewed at Robert Lange Studios, Fine Art Gallery in Charleston, SC.

Now & Then: Photographs by Wade Lawrence is a special portfolio of eight images representing common threads - architectural textures, the female form, shadow and light, and impermanence - through thirty-five years of photographic art by Lawrence. Each of the eight 13" x 19" archival prints is printed by the photographer and is signed, titled, and numbered in a limited edition of 20 plus 2 artist proofs. The prints are matted and housed in a linen-covered portfolio box.

"When I was selecting the images to include in this series - from among all my work over the past thirty-five years - these eight images sang to me," says Lawrence. "Four from around 1980 and four from 2004 seemed to harmonize among themselves. The rich architectural textures of Drayton Hall and the Old City Jail play a counterpoint to the exterior spaces of two houses near the shore of Lake Superior at Duluth. Several of the photos feature figure studies - as ghosts or as the women they are - adding a human voice to the piece".

"While these eight photographs certainly do not represent all of my artistic output, they do represent some of the themes to which I continually return, and they work extremely well together," adds Lawrence.

For many years, Lawrence has used a variety of small-, medium-, and large-format film cameras, but he recently turned to high-end digital photography, exploring the differences between the two media and the opportunities those differences provide for fine art photography. A native of New Orleans, he studied photography and printmaking at the University of Tennessee and The University of Florida, and in the late 1970s he began to exhibit his fine art photography in Minnesota, receiving critical acclaim.

Lawrence has a bachelor of arts in art history and a master of arts in early American culture. His photos have been published in Winterthur Portfolio, America's City Halls, Preservation Magazine, and others. Lawrence's photos have been exhibited at the Tweed Art Museum, Plains Art Museum, the Roarke Gallery, and the Brooks Memorial Art Gallery, and the City Gallery at Waterfront Park in Charleston. In 2003, he was invited to participate in Who Among Us, a photo exhibition to raise awareness of homelessness in Charleston.

In addition to Now & Then, Lawrence's Drayton Hall Series and Ghosts can be seen on the walls of this gallery. These images represent two of Lawrence's current and past projects. The Ghost series (1977-82) is comprised of traditional, film-based black and white images that take advantage of long exposures, multiple exposures, and other in-camera manipulations to evoke the spirit world. The Drayton Hall series (2004) is a color exploration of the female form in a historic, architectural context.
