February Issue 2005

Spartanburg Artists' Guild in Spartanburg, SC, Features Works by Elaine Wagner

The Spartanburg Artists' Guild Gallery, located at the Arts Center in Spartanburg, SC, opens an exhibit of watercolors by Elaine Stone Wagner on Feb. 1 which continues through Feb. 28, 2005.

Wagner, a native of Pennsylvania, earned her bachelor of fine arts degree in fashion design and worked as a fashion illustrator and fashion coordinator for a major women's dress house in New York. After she and her husband, Dr. W. S. Wagner, moved to Spartanburg in 1970, she taught painting in the Art School of the Spartanburg County Museum of Art and was on the faculty of Wofford College, teaching studio art there from 1977 until she retired in 1997.

"The pieces in this show are typical of my work. My husband and I travel extensively, and my usual subjects are the people and the wildlife of the places we have visited," Wagner said of her works, many of which show wildlife in their natural setting. "I arrange people in composite patterns against backgrounds that are sometimes abstract, sometime realistic, but always mirroring the mood of the locale."

Though she has worked in other media, Wagner now works exclusively in watercolor. She is a signature member of the South Carolina Watercolor Society and her works were included in both the 2000 and 2002 Southern Watercolor Society's Annual Exhibitions. Many of her paintings are held in private collections in the United States and Europe, as well as locally at First Federal Savings and Loan of Spartanburg, Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, the University of South Carolina Upstate, Bankers Trust and the Spartanburg County Museum of Art.
