The Sylvan Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Sculptors Tim Cherry and Richard Loffler

The Sylvan Gallery in Charleston, SC, is pleased to present the wildlife bronzes of Tim Cherry and Richard Loffler in Feb. 2005 to coincide with the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, held in locations throughout downtown Charleston.

Tim Cherry was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and grew up in Nelson in British Columbia. At age 15, he became a wrangler and cook with an outfitter who led fishing and hunting trips into the wilderness. Over the next fifteen years, he continued this firsthand study of animals, (specializing in moose and bear hunting), in the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Escaping into the wilds was then, and still is, a spiritual experience for Cherry.

For three years Cherry worked with and learned animal anatomy and modeling animals' musculature from Forest Hart, noted taxidermist and mannequin sculptor. He later worked in the studios of well known sculptors Dan Ostermiller and Fritz White.

Cherry produces sculptures that attract the viewer's eye and the hand. In a profile in Art Of The West, Cherry said, "Animals have personalities that make me smile and that is what I try to convey through my work." His style had evolved from the realism of taxidermy to the simplified shapes and curvilinear forms he is recognized for today. "Capturing the grace and elegance of my subjects is my primary goal." The smooth finish on Cherry's work is very labor-intensive, requiring hours of polishing and the work pays off creating stylized sculptures that are real and whimsical at the same time.

Cherry is a member of the Society of Animal Artists, National Sculpture Society and the National Sculptors Guild. He received the James Earle Fraser Sculpture Award at the Prix de West Invitational and a Bronze Medal from the National Sculpture Society. Cherry has shown in numerous prestigious shows throughout the US and Canada including the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. He received a commission to create a monumental running grizzly bear titled Mountain Run to be displayed in Salt Lake City.

Richard Loffler grew up on the Saskatchewan prairie. His passion for wildlife art developed in his childhood. Time with farm relatives as well as camping, hunting and fishing trips led to a love of animals. Loffler has always enjoyed being close to animals, with a curiosity and admiration. He works on location from life to capture the true essence of the animals.

"Working from life affords me controlled confidence. My approach is traditional with impressionistic flavor." Capturing the character of animals, their instinctive gestures, is Loffler's goal. In his approach, he carries this through to the finished product by chasing the metals and overseeing the patinas and completed works.

A member of the Society of Animal Artists and the National Sculpture Society, Loffler shows with the Western Visions Miniature Show at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Wyoming. He has received the Robert Lougheed Memorial Award at the Prix de West and exhibited at the Gilcrease Museum of Art in Tulsa, OK.

The Sylvan Gallery focuses on 20th and 21st century representational art. The gallery is one of the few in Charleston to represent multiple sculptors.
