February Issue 2006

Elder Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers Works by Emerging Artists

Elder Gallery in Charlotte, NC's SouthEnd Arts District will present the exhibit, Emerging Artists 2006, featuring work by eight up-and-coming artists through Feb. 18, 2006. The following artists have been selected to participate in the exhibition based upon the unique nature of their work: Brett Amory, Liliane Eberle Bouquet, Matthew Frederick, Jung Han Kim, Leandro Manzo, John Palmer, Ralph Tuturro, and Daniel Tousignant.

Artists Brett Amory and Jung Han Kim are both recent graduates of the San Francisco Academy of Art. Kim received a bachelor's degree in fine art from Seoul National University prior to earning his Masters of Fine Art in San Francisco. Both artists have been awarded numerous prizes and recognition while completing their studies.

Recently, Kim was named one of America's rising stars in Southwest Art magazine's Emerging Artists issue which featured their selection of the top 21 artists under the age of 31.

Liliane Eberle Bouquet's photography is printed on glass which creates a unique presentation of her sensual photos. John Palmer and Ralph Tuturro are both abstract painters with unique styles and techniques. The development of Palmer's paintings has been described as "taking the knowledge of the old masters to jettison his work into the future."

Tuturro's paintings are heavily influenced by his early years growing up in New York. Tuturro states "there are still intrinsic elements that remain the same: things that are real, have a smell, a texture; things that are honest, clear, straightforward, make you laugh; things that wake you up, scare you, make you think." His artwork reflects these basic elements of his world.

Matthew Frederick's paintings are indicative of his passion for nature that stems deeply from his surroundings in Northern California. His current series features a selection of bucolic landscapes and still life paintings executed in a distinctive style. A distinguishing feature of Frederick's method is an intense saturation of color that is achieved through generous applications of paint and undulating brushwork. Such stylistic elements serve to create a surface texture that emphasizes the liveliness of his subjects.

Daniel Tousignant's paintings effortlessly flow from within him. When first viewing his work you are surprised to find out that he is so young since his works have an antique quality which is the antithesis of the contemporary painter.

Leandro Manzo was born in Rio Gallegos, Santa Cruz, Argentina in 1969 and is a fourth generation artist. His talent was recognized at a very young age and a public exhibition of his work was held when he was thirteen years old at the Museum of Art in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The subject matter of Manzo's paintings and drawings are heavily influenced by his Argentine background.

The exhibition's eclectic mix of work makes for an exciting event.
