February Issue 2006

Green Rice Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Jason Basden and Kate Vasseur

Two local artists collaborate for a show to open at NoDa's Green Rice Gallery in Charlotte, NC, from Feb. 3 through Mar. 4, 2006. The show, titled INHABIT, will exhibit the compelling works of Jason Basden and Kate Vasseur.

The way these artists "inhabit" and view their surroundings inspire them to create modern pieces of art that capture everyone's imagination. A viewer can see in both artist's works the use of resources from simple everyday objects to pieces of nature lost in the modern day. Wherever their pieces dwell they establish a dialogue with the audience.

Jason Basden

Jason Basden's imagery is inspired by story, myth, and his own imagination with a detail to femininity in ways that are reminiscent of Neolithic fertility sculptures and African art. His sculptures allude to the soft, delicate, and often fragile nature of the forms themselves. His Faerie sculptures mask-like face produce a somber expression leaving the conclusion of dialogue to the viewer.

Kate Vasseur

Kate Vasseur's quest for the unique, the functional, and the beautiful in everyday life serves as her muse when composing art. Her paintings are a blend of fantasy with an element of nostalgia. Images of a bygone era color her canvas as much as her brush strokes do.

"These two artists have complementary styles and a common subject matter that are very powerful together," said Green Rice Gallery owner Allison Hertzler. "The way they will inhabit the gallery will be an art form in itself."
