February Issue 2006

Art League of Henderson County in Hendersonville, NC, Features Exhibit by American Women

The Art League of Henderson County will host the exhibit of works by members of The National League of American Pen Women at Opportunity House in Hendersonville, NC, from Feb. 5 - 28, 2006.

The National League of American Pen Women was established in 1897 to provide an organization for women of the press, who were at that time, denied membership in the National Press Club. Fifty professional women writers, composers and artists finally obtained a legal charter in 1926, and since that time membership has reached 4,000 women.

The Western Carolina Branch of the League was established in 1980 with Joyce Blakely of Zirconia, NC, as president. Most of its members are visual artists, but writers are well represented too. The organization has been exhibiting biennially for the past several years at the Transylvania Arts Center in Brevard, NC. The group is happy to be returning this year to Opportunity House.

Art League members exhibiting their work with the Pen Women are Joyce Blakely, Dean Landriau, Cynthia Moser, Bettye Paden, Rita Peranio, Ruth Sampson, and Gerri Schwake. In addition to the visual artists, several area writers will show their work.
