February Issue 2007

Hidell Brooks Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Chris Metz

Hidell Brooks Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting their first solo exhibition for Chris Metz with the exhibit, Recent Work, on view through Feb. 24, 2007.

Metz is a dual citizen of the United States and Canada. Born in 1973, he grew up in both Montreal, Quebec and Brooklyn, New York. He studied painting and sculpture at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver.

Metz strives to bring into balance the common abstract nature that allows all things to relate to each other, on a stage that is removed from specific meanings. His works are about the relationships between the elements. Metz says, "the elements in my paintings are composed of shapes that are indistinct, what they allude to remains in question. This ambiguity, as well as their interaction within what appears to be a landscape, is at the core of my paintings. I am inspired by the relationship that exists between land and sky and the forms that link the two together: the gaseous quality of smoke or a mist combined with the rigid form of a tower; the expansiveness of a body of water met with undecipherable man made structures; and in making the space that lies between two elements to create a unique form."
