Joie Lassiter Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers Works by Peggy Rivers

Joie Lassiter Gallery in Charlotte, NC, presents ARS GRATIA ARTIS, an exhibition for artist Peggy Rivers. The exhibition opens Feb. 2 and will be on view through Feb. 28, 2007. Her work represents a flowering, emotional, intellectual and artistic prospective and ultimately, the cyclic nature of life and death.

Rivers was born in Reykjavik, Iceland. While attending Humboldt State University in northern California, she made the decision to pursue a BA in art and to become a working artist. She also holds an MA in studio art from Humboldt and an MFA in painting from Columbia University. Her art has encompassed many themes expressed in distinctive bodies of work and has been figurative as well as abstract.

Over the past two years Rivers has pursued a perplexed and confounded body of work. The work represents a substantial synthesis of several aspects of her paintings in the last decade. It clearly draws upon the totality of her own art-making vocabulary and craft as well as new information that she constantly seeks through observation, readings and study. These works are at once contemporaneous and ancient in sensibility. She often uses tremendous amount of glazing and varnish to reinforce the liquid nature of the cosmos, especially evident in biology. Life is motion and motion is ultimately fluid.

Some of the passages in the paintings are ethereal and nebulous, some are lyrical and beautiful. The underlying structure within the picture plane defies most rules of composition. Not wanting the paintings to be predictable, Rivers has to resist making the compositions conform to the rules. The surprise of the structure and invented color relationships are intentionally designed to reflect the true content underneath the imagery.
