February Issue 2008

Art Nouveau Gallery in Myrtle Beach, SC, Features Works by Richard Lawler

Art Nouveau Gallery & Studio in Myrtle Beach, SC, presents an exhibit of original oil paintings of America's Cup Racing Yachts and Historical Ships of Yesteryear by artist Richard Lawler, on view from Feb. 1 - 29, 2008.

Lawler's paintings depict the grand ships that were instrumental in the development of America during the last 200 years. From working class to luxury liners his paintings capture the time and moment of the era. The America's Cup series illustrate how boat design has changed over the years.

Lawler was born and raised in Yonkers, NY, a short distance from the Hudson River. In 1950, his parents took him for a day trip on the dayliner Alexander Hamilton, a classic vintage sidewheeler. He was so mesmerized and in awe of the great ship that he did not want the trip to end. So began his love affair with the sea and vintage vessels. Lawler spent countless hours watching the dayliners and other classic Hudson River vessels from the vantage point of the Yonkers City Pier.

During Lawler's tour of service in Germany, he spent many hours with the classic painters of Heidelberg and Munich who painted in the style of the old masters, working from dark to light, through a series of glazes to capture the emotion and drama of the subject. "I try to incorporate in each painting the techniques I learned from these classic painters," said Lawler. "I have always loved the sea with its ever-changing moods and the grand, majestic historical ships that have sailed on it. I especially love the large beautiful yachts that vied for the Americas Cup over the years and the graceful steamers that once sailed the Hudson River. The great war ships and sea battles of the past inspire me to capture historical moments that forever changed our lives and live in the memories of all."

Lawler chooses each subject based on the drama and emotional impact of the vessels involved in the composition. The play of light on the water and subject helps to bring life to these historical vessels in their most dramatic moments. He spends much time researching each subject so they can be historically accurate as depicted. Lawler's goal is to capture the images of these proud vessels so that their memory lives on forever. Many of his paintings are hanging worldwide in private and corporate collections.
