February Issue 2008

City Art Gallery in Columbia, SC, Offers Works by Kathleen Robbins

Beginning Feb. 21, City Art in Columbia, SC, will exhibit the photography of Columbia artist Kathleen Robbins in a show titled The Art Of Arranging Things. The show will continue through Mar. 22, 2008.

Originally from Mississippi, Robbins moved to South Carolina in 2003 and is currently a professor and head of the photography department at the University of South Carolina. She received her BA from Millsaps College in Jackson, MS, and her MFA from the University of New Mexico, each with a concentration in photography.

Robbins' work has been exhibited worldwide, including the 2006 Ping Yao International Photography Festival in Ping Yao, China, and the 2006 International Juried Exhibition at the San Diego Art Institute's Museum of the Living Artist.

Robbins offers the following on her exhibit, "The Art of Arranging Things explores familial obligation and our conflicted relationship with home. The photographs in this series weave together my own memories with those of my friends and family, combining a sense of personal history with a broader visual concept of the American South. I return to Mississippi often to photograph, and when I go back I lose my sensibilities. I forget how long I have been gone and which life I am living."

Robbins' portrayal of the pull between familial obligation and independence is perceived through her photos in a subtle and elegant way. Upfront she presents the beauty found in historical southern homes with the dense history just beneath the surface. By portraying a conflict dealt with by everyone viewers will find the images relevant to their life experiences.

City Art represents regional artists of all mediums. Separated into three distinct galleries, City Art houses paintings, pottery, metalwork, and glass.
