February Issue 2008

Nina Liu and Friends in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Michael Johnson

Nina Liu and Friends in Charleston, SC, highlights the 2008 leap year months of Feb., Mar. and Apr. with a two-part exhibit entitled, Never Seen, Never Shown, that presents Michael Johnson's silver gelatin photographs. The first exhibit begins on Feb. 15, introducing a special, limited exhibition of Johnson's most recent work, this exhibition will be the first public presentation of these photographs. It will be on view through Feb. 17, 2008. The gallery will continue Never Seen, Never Shown with a selection of works that spans a period of time stretching back to the 1970s. This retrospective portion of the exhibition will consist of images that Johnson never has shown in the Southeastern United States and will be on display from Feb. 18 through Apr. 30, 2008.

The Los Angeles Times has referred to Johnson as "one of the country's premier landscape photographers." Echoing that statement, gallery owner Liu states that Johnson's photographs evoke the timeless qualities of the American landscape. Featuring subjects as varied as ancient pueblos and canyons from the American West, snow covered trees and undulating fields, or Lowcountry landscapes and tumbling barns from the nation's heartland, Johnson masterfully creates enticing photographs that encourage the viewer's eye to linger over them.

Among the institutions that have collected Johnson's photographs are the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Illinois State Museum in Springfield, IL; and the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston. He also has exhibited his work at Photo Gallery International in Tokyo, Japan. Johnson's photographs are in the collections of Sprint, McDonald's, Bank of America, and many other corporations.
