Wilkes Art Gallery in North Wilkesboro, NC, Features Two New Exhibits

The Wilkes Art Gallery in North Wilkesboro, NC, is presenting two new exhibitions including: Poetic Imagery: Original Works in Photography by Joanna Frazier Hudson and Carolina Clay: A Celebration of North Carolina's Craft Heritage, featuring works by over 30 NC potters. Both exhibits will be on view through Feb. 22, 2008.

Joanna Frazier Hudson was born in High Point, NC. She studied drawing, photography and film at Virginia Commonwealth University and from there received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. After graduation, she continued work as art director for Hudson Studios specializing in furniture photography and catalog printing. Work in the field supplemented her creative projects until attending a graduate school at the University of NC at Greensboro where she received a Masters Degree in Fine Art. Her studies were primarily painting, photography and film.

Hudson's collection of work from the past two decades is currently on display in numerous venues and she travels to local shows and gatherings to display her art. Her work ranges from still-life, hand-tinted images to stone lithographs and a range of photographic methods. Hudson's ability to bring imagery to poetry and poetry to images is her forte.

About her work, Hudson writes, "I am a photographer. I make photographs and pictures that depict life cycles. The camera-eye makes images metaphorically mimicking personal experiences. The graphic quality of the black and white silver print impresses and expresses subtle tonal nuances of mystery and luminosity. I work in the darkroom printing my negatives and at times on the drawing table adding bits of color by hand-tinting, extracting, refracting and reacting. Some photographs are straight printing. In others, I combine negatives and use masking, solarizing, toning, and hand-tinting to make from the negative, the image I want to see. I am using a scientific medium to create my art."

Participating potters in the exhibit, Carolina Clay: A Celebration of North Carolina's Craft Heritage, will be exhibiting a variety of works and styles depicting the wide range of clay as an artistic and functional medium. Exhibiting potters include Amy Manson, Ralph Mallo, Roger Strom, Brenda Roberts, Walter Aberson, Robin Beckett, Michelle Hicks, Adrienne Dellinger, Julie Wiggins, John Maddox, Raine Middleton, Valerie Hawkins, Sylvia Coppola, Robin Briggs, Joyce Branch, Bob Helsel, Vickie Gill, Amy Sanders, Dale Duncan, Verna Witt, Ine Van Den Bosch, Bob Hasselle, David Clark, Shilpa Shah, Jennifer Mecca, Janet Johnson, Babs Goodall, Fred Rust, Debbie Rust, Keith Myers and Jenny Hargrave. They are all members of the group Carolina Clay Matters.

Carolina Clay Matters was founded over 15 years ago in Charlotte, NC, by Leslie Betz Malone, potter and instructor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The group has grown over the years to now include approximately 100 members. The Guild hosts bi-annual pottery shows in May and October and exhibits collectively throughout the year. The Guild meets monthly to collaborate and share ideas and information. They also sponsor workshops on a variety of relative topics with instructors from across the country.
