The Charleston Arts Coalition Aspires to Unite Charleston's Creative Community on Feb. 20, 2009

The Charleston Arts Coalition (CAC), a cross-disciplinary coalition of voices aspiring to unite Charleston's creative community, will début in its first public appearance on Feb. 20, 2009 at a Coalition Carnival: It's a Bloco! Festivities start at 6pm at the City Gallery at the Waterfront Park in Charleston, SC. The event is free and open to public. Space is limited, RSVP necessary.

The first coalition event is themed around the legendary Brazilian carnival featuring art, samba imagery, a taste of Brazilian food, a brief Capoeira dance presentation by Capoeira Performance Arts as well as music by Duda Lucena & Friends. "Bloco is a celebration of the people. It is an opportunity for everyone to join together dancing, drumming, singing and parading as one unified community," says Duda Anderson, a native from Rio de Janiero. Capoeira is a uniquely Brazilian folk dance, an art form that combines fight, dance, rhythm and movement. Samba is a Brazilian musical genre derived from African and European roots, which is recognized worldwide as a symbol of Brazil and Carnival.

The coalition was established as a vehicle for expression and is evolving into a collaborative effort to promote and enhance Charleston's rich array of creative disciplines including visual, culinary and performing arts, architecture, design and much more. The group, supported by volunteers who are passionate about Charleston's creative community, is building bridges and partnering with a variety of organizations and members in the business community. Its first official event, a celebration of creativity of the people and for the people, exemplifies the vision of the coalition to inspire and unite creative individuals, organizations and business in the greater Charleston region.

Jessica Solomon Bluestein, President of the CAC says: "The coalition is developing into a creative container inspired by, created by and developed by 'creatives'. In a bold way, the coalition is guided by the principle that together we can solve problems, innovate with solutions and share creative genius with each other."

The Charleston Arts Coalition will provide a forum and virtual gateway for creative individuals, organizations and businesses to collaborate on projects, exchange ideas, host special events and, in general, promote creativity in Charleston through advocacy, outreach, promotion and educational and professional programming.

The CAC would like to extend its gratitude to the City of Charleston, Office of Cultural Affairs and Ellen Dressler Moryl for hosting the inaugural event at the City Gallery and on-going support. The City Gallery at the Waterfront Park is located at 34 Prioleau Street in downtown Charleston. Please RSVP by e-mail to (chasar...@gmail.com) or call 843/810-9708.
