North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by PAINT NC

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, NC, will present the exhibit, Painting Prairie Ridge, featuring watercolors and acrylic paintings by PAINT NC, on view from Feb.  5 - 28, 2010, at the Museum's Nature Art Gallery.

Prairie Ridge, the field station of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, provided the perfect inspiration for 24 members of PAINT NC last year, when they visited the outdoor classroom and turned their inspiration into art. The artists first visited in spring and again in the fall to paint "en plein air," which means in the open air or outdoors in natural light. The exhibit, Painting Prairie Ridge, features approximately 30 watercolor and acrylic paintings.

Prairie Ridge is located on 38 acres in west Raleigh off Wade Avenue and the Edwards Mill Extension and consists of an outdoor classroom, amphitheater and walking trails with access to a variety of habitats, including prairie, pond and lowland forest. Plein Air artists typically work quickly and finish or nearly finish a work on site in the style of the European Impressionist painters who first popularized the idea of painting outdoors in the mid-nineteenth century.

PAINT NC is made up of both professional and emerging artists who regularly organize visits to different places to paint as a group. These can be urban sites, formal gardens, private residences or local farms, and natural sites like Prairie Ridge. The group maintains a website at (www.paintnc.org). Since many of them are professional artists, they exhibit their work regularly throughout the Triangle and beyond. Several teach art classes and many have also won awards and published their work, including Kim Maselli, who recently published the book Impressions of North Carolina: Painting En Plein Air that includes the work of many PAINT NC members.
