February Issue 2010

Old Town Bluffton (SC) Offers Gallery Walk on Feb. 19, 2010

Old Town Bluffton Art Galleries, in Bluffton, SC, will again host its popular Gallery Walk on Feb. 19, 2010, from 3-6pm. There's a reason Old Town Bluffton is home some of the Lowcountry's best art galleries. Live oaks, historic buildings and friendly people welcome visitors to an eclectic mix of galleries and shops. May River Road, Calhoun Street and Boundary Street house galleries which are filled with fine art and fine crafts created by some of our areas most creative artists. This gallery walk will provide visitors an opportunity to meet many of Bluffton's finest artists in various galleries.

The work of over 200 artists can be seen at the SoBA Gallery (Society of Bluffton Artists), Pluff Mudd Gallery, Maye River Gallery, Four Corners Framing, The Filling Station, Vintage Posters and Jacob Preston's. Wine and refreshments will be served by each gallery. There will be live music on Boundary and Calhoun Streets throughout the entire event. This event has traditionally brought 600 visitors to Old Town Bluffton.

For this gallery walk sculptor Wayne Edwards whose best known work in our area is the Neptune sculpture at Shelter Cove, will be at Four Corners Framing and Art. The gallery will also be featuring oil paintings by Edwards, who grew up in the Charlotte, NC, area, studied at the Ringling School of Art, as well as at the Mint Museum. His work can be seen all over the area both indoors and out. Examples that can be easily viewed , the Neptune sculpture at Shelter Cover, the Mary sculpture at Holy Family, the playground at Harbour Town, the Tree House at Palmetto Bluff. Edwards is now doing paintings with oil on canvas, seeming to be most interested in still life. He has varied subjects and a beautiful sense of light.

Doris Shay

At Maye River Gallery, the works of Doris Shay are on exhibit as the gallery's first visiting artist. Doris and her husband, Willis, have long been active in the Hilton Head arts community. Willis has worked extensively with the Hilton Head Symphony and The International Piano Competition while Doris has quietly produced lovely visual images in watercolor and oil. Watercolor is Doris' favorite medium and the exhibit will be filled with vibrant paintings of flowers as well as still life and landscapes of Lowcountry scenes and images from her many travels.

As usual visitors to Preston Pottery Studio will see Bluffton's tallest potter, Jacob Preston, at work in his studio and will learn about his unique approach to his craft.

The recently acquired wood carvings of Bob Berman will be on display at Pluff Mudd Art. Berman's finely crafted birds are hand carved in tupelo and an exciting new addition to the gallery.

Betty Luntey

The Society of Bluffton Artists (SoBA) presents the exhibit, Island Gifts, recent watercolor works, by Betty Luntey. Luntey says, "My life has always revolved around islands and the many unique charms they have to offer." She is fortunate to be able to winter in Hilton Head and summer on Shelter Island, NY. On Shelter Island, she and her husband maintain an extensive garden dedicated to flowers. That garden is the inspiration for many of Luntey's works. She finds watercolor the perfect medium to work with outdoors where she does much of her painting.

Old Town Vintage Posters' current exhibit includes approx. 50 travel posters dating from 1897 to 1970's, Many are international and USA locations. Proprietor Tom Lewis will discuss the history and techniques used in creating these collector works of art.

The work of some of the area's finest artists will be on exhibit at The Filling Station, including the fun and funky paintings of David Musial and Kelly Graham.

This event is sponsored by the Old Town Bluffton Merchants Association.
