March Issue 2000

Asheville Gallery of Art, in Asheville, NC, Features Works by Jean Horton Battey

Asheville Gallery of Art, in downtown Asheville, NC, Artists-of-the-Month for March will be Bakersville, NC artist Jean Horton Battey.

Battey has worked in handmade paper pulp as an art medium for the past ten years. Her focus has been on pigmented pulp paintings with recent works incorporating mixed media and fibers. Her work is driven by her love of color and the endless opportunities which wet pulp and fiber offer for blending, shading and texturing her subject matter.

Battey attended Columbus College of Art and Design. She was Artist in Residence at the Broward Art Guild in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and on the faculty of the Lancaster County Art Association in Pennsylvania. Battey has had numerous one-person shows, and has been represented in juried shows including the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale, The University of Arts in Philadelphia, Florida Atlantic University, Doshi Center for Contemporary Art and the Rose Lehrman Gallery, Harrisburg, PA. Her handmade papers are featured in Papermaking with Plants by Helen Hiebert and Paper from Plants by Peter and Donna Thomas. Battey owns and operates the Laughing Fish hand papermaking studio in Bakersville.
