Exhibitions of Two Young West Coast Artists at Davidson College in Davidson, NC

The William H. Van Every, Jr. Gallery at Davidson College in Davidson, NC, is hosting an exhibition of new mixed media works by Gabriel Rivera through Apr. 22. Shepard Fairey will present prints through Apr. 13

L.A.-based Gabriel Rivera creates large scale works on canvas that respond to his chaotic, urban environment, and which convey an underlying notion of transience reflective of the Hollywood scene.

Rivera, a former professional musician in a West Coast rock band, fills his canvases with all the raw, straight-forward energy associated with that music. By combining materials such as powdered graphite, tar, and discarded buckets of house paint, the heavily textured surfaces reveal and conceal information, resulting in a heavy-handed representation of recollections and predictions.

Concurrent with the Rivera exhibit, an exhibition entitled OBEY: Shepard Fairey will be on display in the adjacent Edward M. Smith Gallery through Apr.13. These prints, created by Fairey, consist primarily of repeated and manipulated images of professional wrestling star, Andre the Giant.

Fairey's images first appeared in the early 1990s as stickers, spray painted stencils, and posters in the urban environments of Los Angeles and New York. Since then his messages of "urban beautification" have shown up all over the globe. More information on the artist and his mission is available at (http://www.obeygiant.com).
