Arts Center of Henderson County in Hendersonville, NC, Offers Non-Traditional Fiber Art

The Arts Center of Henderson County, in Hendersonville, NC, presents L.I.N.T. Ladies in New Textiles: Women to Women - Image to Image, a group exhibition on display through Mar. 31. L.I.N.T Ladies in New Textiles is a small Asheville based group of textile artists who are interested in the art quilt and surface design movements. Pat Samuels and Caroline Manheimer formed the group at the suggestion of Nancy Crow, one of the most influential artists in the art quilt movement. Members of the group meet to support each other in their exploration of non-traditional fiber art. They seek to promote their artistic growth and education, provide supportive networking and opportunities for exhibiting.

Studio Art Quilt Associates, a leading non-profit advocacy group, defines the art quilt as: "A contemporary art work exploring and expressing aesthetic concerns common to the whole range of visual arts, painting, printing, photography, graphic design, assemblage and sculpture, which retains, however, through material or technique a clear relationship to the folk art quilt from which it descents."

Paula Callaghan, Norma Bradley and Diana Dinardis incorporate narrative themes, personal stories, or life events using embellishment, beading, and symbolic objects in their pieces while Peggy DeBeil carries this approach even further using found objects, photography, and silkscreen in her assemblages. Caroline Manheimer, Suzanne Gernandt, Heather Allen and new member Karen Swing employ dyeing and surface design techniques while another new member Laura Sims, marbleizes cloth and paper.

Pat Samuels works in a unique mosaic technique, which she then embellishes and stamps using textile inks. Bernie Rowell paints canvas with acrylic paint, which she then assembles in quilt-like fashion and embellishes. Janice Maddox pushes the envelope of traditional quilt designs. This exhibition at The Arts Center of Henderson County represents current work of L.I.N.T.
