Tidwell Art Center & Gallery in Charleston, SC, Celebrates 12th Anniversary of Classes

The Tidwell Art Center and Gallery in Charleston, SC, will be hosting an exhibit Mar. 17-31 that will feature oil paintings created by the students of Martin Ahrens and Joyce Hall. The exhibit will mark the 12th anniversary for Ahrens' classes at Tidwell's.

Over the years Ahrens' students have ranged from beginners to award-winning professionals, from teens to senior citizens as well as artists accomplished in other mediums who wanted to convert to oils. His students have dominated the Charleston show and gallery scene for many years. This exhibit will represent more than 50 of the school's current students. If it were to include all the artists who have studied with Ahrens over the decade it would fill the Gaillard auditorium.

Joyce Hall joined the Tidwell teaching staff a little over a year ago and already has a waiting list for her classes. Although she is relatively new to the Charleston teaching community, Hall has taught extensively over the past 30 years. She owned two major art academies in the Washington, DC area, one in partnership with Arhens. Both artists have international reputations, and are represented in museums and exhibitions around the nation. Ahrens is best known as a portrait and wildlife painter, and Hall for her equine and bird art.

The show promises to be an exciting display of emerging oil painters, and many of the works will be for sale. There will also be an exhibit of class demonstrations and information on the classes. Most of the classes are filled, some by students who have held their spots for many years, but there will be registration for the few remaining openings and the new classes that Tidwell's will be adding to the spring schedule. Instruction is offered weekdays, evenings and Saturdays. Ahrens remarks, "We will teach you how to see color, and not be afraid to use it."
