Lowcountry Heritage Society in Charleston, SC, Offers Evening of Poetry and Visual Arts

The Lowcountry Heritage Society in Charleston, SC, is proud to present its spring event: Sacred Ground. The public is invited to attend this one evening event on Sat., Mar. 29, 2003, from 7:30-10pm at Gage Hall on Archdale Street in downtown Charleston. The event consists of an art exhibition in Gage Hall beginning at 7:30pm with a tour of the historic Unitarian Church at 8pm and poetry by torchlight in the cemetery at 8:30pm. Please join us to view and hear these new works of art inspired by Lowcountry places of worship. This celebration of the arts is free of charge. Please bring art lovers with you to enjoy this opportunity to meet the artists and see and hear their latest work.

The participating visual artists are Tammi Cardnella, Susan Colwell, Beverly Derrick, Jill Hooper, Mike Kennedy, Ron Rocz, Mott Kornahrens, Amelia Rose Smith, Bo Sweeny, Karen Larsen Turner, Morgan Kuhn, Karen Vornakis, Mary Walker, Cisco Lindsey, Linda Fantuzzo, Sallie Simons, Tripp Smith and Lese Corrigan. Karen Larson Turner painted the lovely image of the Unitarian graveyard used for the promotion of this event.

The poets reading during this event are Kate Bullard Adams, Ace Evans, Cameron Evers, Carol Furtwangler, Don Geddes, Hermine Stanyard, Lonnie Hubbard, Jr., Ellen Hyatt, Susan Meyers, George Pope, Harriet Rigney, Dennis Ward Stiles and Charles Witte Waring III.

The Lowcountry Heritage Society was created in 1994 and is dedicated to the production of new works of art, music and literature about or inspired by the South Carolina Lowcountry. It operates in conjunction with the College of Charleston School of the Arts and is a nonprofit. The society produces two events each year, so far creating over 41 new musical works by 13 composers, two modern dance works, a ballet, two literary anthologies, an original play, and 12 art exhibits. The society's two books are available for purchase.
