I Pinkney Simons Gallery in Beaufort, SC, Features Works by Bill Davis

The I. Pinckney Simons Gallery in Beaufort, SC, will present the exhibit, Whimsical Divas by Bill Davis, which opens on Mar. 20 and continues through Apr. 3, 2004.

Working with paint on canvas as well as ceramics, Davis features his mischievous females celebrating life, love, and song anywhere from Church Street in Charleston, to a colorful cocktail lounge, a tropical island, or even on a wild adventure in a SUV. Whether set against charming Lowcountry architecture or surrounded by exotic animals such as hippos and flamingos, the scenes of the Divas in action feature the ever cheerful, ever playful ladies in long, flowing ball gowns. The figures revel in their Diva status and rejoice with open mouths and faces tilted back towards the sky.

These colorful works by Davis have been featured in numerous articles including recognition by the South Carolina Arts Commission who featured his painting Divas On A Not So Deserted Island on the cover of their in house magazine Artifacts. The title eludes to the array of Divas surrounded by friendly playmates to be found in the local animal life including a monkey who appears to be as mischievous as the Divas themselves. The Free Times, Columbia's entertainment newspaper named Davis as favorite artist for three years. He has been featured in articles in The State Newspaper and Columbia Magazine.

Davis began his painting career as a hobby due to numerous requests from friends, he had his first artist show in 1989 that resulted in a very successful annual event. His Diva Series is definitely his lighter side of life, he maintains a full time position with the South. Carolina Department of Mental Health, where he is the coordinator for NGRI (not guilty by reason of insanity) clinic for the state.

Davis' Divas shine equally on canvas as well as on his decorative chargers, plates, bowls that add an element of fun to any room.
