March Issue 2004

McKissick Museum in Columbia, SC, to Feature the Art of Zelda Fitzgerald

One of the most famous and tragic figures of the Jazz Age will be revisited with the University of South Carolina McKissick Museum's exhibit, Zelda By Herself: The Art of Zelda Fitzgerald on view through Apr. 11, 2004, in Columbia, SC.

The traveling exhibit, which was organized by International Arts and Artists of Washington, DC, features a collection of 54 framed watercolors and a portion of paper doll constructions by Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, the wife of writer F. Scott Fitzgerald.

The exhibit will explore Zelda's personality as well. "Since the 1970s, we have become increasingly aware of Zelda Fitzgerald's importance as a writer and artist," said Jay Williams, chief curator of exhibitions for McKissick Museum. "Through the efforts of Professor Matthew Bruccoli and other scholars, she has moved out of F. Scott Fitzgerald's shadow."

"She was as passionate an artist as her husband, and that almost obsessive dedication to her art is reflected in this exhibition," Williams said.

The museum also will offer several special events in conjunction with the exhibit, including a creative writing workshop series and a day-long seminar on paper-based artistic activities.

The Muse's Whisper: Writing with Zelda is a creative-writing seminar by Charlene Spearen, a 2003 USC graduate with an MFA in creative writing. She is assistant director of USC's Poetry Initiative and the poet-in-residence at the Columbia Museum of Art. Set for on three consecutive Thur. evenings (Mar. 25, Apr. 1 and Apr. 8, 2004) from 5:30 to 6:30pm, this seminar will celebrate and explore the pleasures associated with writing a journal and poetry. The seminar is geared for the novice as well as experienced writers and teachers of writing and literature. The seminar is free, but advance registration is required by calling the education curator at 803/777-7251. Light refreshments will be available.

Free Spirit Journey: Lessons from Zelda is an invigorating day-long seminar of selfexploration and renewal inspired by the life and art of Zelda Fitzgerald. Sessions throughout the day include paperbased artistic endeavors like watercolor painting, scrapbook making and paper-doll construction, all elements used by Zelda in reacting to her lifestyle, sense of self and mental illness. The seminar will take place Sat., Mar. 27, from 9am-6pm. (Box lunch and refreshments included). Class size is limited to 20 participants. Registration is $75 before Mar. 5 and $85 after.

To register or to receive more information, contact the Education Curator at 803/777-7251. Call Alice Bouknight to order boxed lunch of preference.
