Plein-Air Painters Show at Smith-Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC

Shannon Smith

To Charlestonians it's not unusual to see West Frasier or Shannon Smith on a street corner working intensely on a canvas. These two well-known artists have a love for painting out-of-doors, En Plein Air. This technique of painting outside the studio walls has long been a tradition in Charleston. With the light of the sun's reflection constantly changing over the water and across the facades of buildings, the scenery must be captured quickly, lest the light pass on without recognition. Charleston has a lot to offer an artist looking for inspiration.

Dawn Whitelaw Junko Ono Rothwell

Smith-Killian Fine Art is honoring this tradition by hosting the Plein Air Painters of the Southeast here in Charleston, SC, Mar. 2-5, 2004. The public is encouraged to watch artists at work throughout the area at scenic locations such as Shem Creek, Colonial Lake, Broad Street, Church Street, and Queen Street. The gallery will then present an exhibition opening on Mar. 5, for all pieces completed during this week. The exhibit will hang in its entirety until Mar. 19, 2004.

The Plein Air Painters of the Southeast is an alliance of professional artists that was founded in the fall of 2003. These artists dedicate themselves to continuing the practice of painting directly from nature. If you would like to receive any information regarding specific times and places please contact the gallery; we will be pleased to share any information.
