Davidson College in Davidson, NC, Features Works by McArthur Freeman, II

Davidson College in Davidson, NC, will present the exhibit, Black Fairy Tales & Other Myths Paintings & Drawings by McArthur Freeman, II, on view at the Belk Visual Arts Center from Mar. 10 through Apr. 14, 2006.

McArthur Freeman, II, was born in 1974 in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He received his BFA from the University of Florida in 1997 and his MFA from Cornell University in 2001. He is currently the Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at Davidson College in North Carolina.

Freeman, describes his work as "narrative paintings, drawings, and installations exploring race, double consciousness, and the construction of identity." Children's book illustrations, fairy tales, and invented characters are conflated with historical narratives, iconography from popular culture, and social critique to create a jarring "wonderland that has gone awry." The juxtaposition of the fantastic with everyday experience allows the artist and the viewer to investigate many of the myths and absurd truths that exist in the real world.

Dr. Michael Harris, Associate Professor of Art History at UNC-Chapel Hill and distinguished artist and curator, provided the insightful essay for the exhibition's full-color brochure. Harris poignantly notes that Freeman's work is "not rooted in insecurity or identity; rather, his foundation is a confident sense of self and the complications of being black in the United States."
