March Issue 2006

Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Vickie Bailey Ebbers

On Mar. 14 and running through Apr. 8, 2006, Vickie Bailey Ebbers will open her show, Light Work, as featured artist at the Hilton Head Art League Gallery in Pineland Station on Hilton Head Island, SC. This show will include flowers, nudes and Lowcountry scenes.

Ebbers works in a variety of mediums, including watercolors, pastels and drawings. A native of Lancaster, SC, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Winthrop University and furthered her art education at New York's Parsons School of Design. She has received numerous awards for her work. The most recent was a Merit Award at the Southeastern Pastel Society's Juried Exhibition in 2005, as well as a first place in the Society of Bluffton Artists Juried Show. That same year, Ebbers was also juried into the South Carolina Watercolor Society's Show and the Georgia Watercolor Society's Juried Exhibition. She also won an Award of Excellence at the 2005 Beaufort Art Association's Show.

Asked to describe her creativity, Ebbers said, "To put into words a philosophy of painting, to me, would draw attention to creativity, like shining a light on it, causing it to run into the shadows. I simply go where I'm led at the moment, either by an idea, the subconscious, or the paint itself."

Ebbers is a member of the plein air painters group, the Apple Pie Painters, but admits that she prefers to work in the solitude and comfort of her studio. "I compose paintings mainly from photographs, but make notes when outside of first impressions and the reason the object caught my eye," she explains.

Her show Light Works, exemplifies the nature of her work. Says Ebbers, "My work is primarily about light and shadows, and positive and negative shapes. I'm drawn to bold designs of light and dark. I push the drama of light and shadows seen in my photos, cropping or editing elements until I'm satisfied with the design and composition." When asked to describe her work, she says, "I like to think of my work as realism with an abstract backbone."

Ebbers is also recognized for her sensitive nude drawings and paintings. She considers the nude figure to be the most fascinating art subject, with endless possibilities in terms of composition and expression. "My objective is not to reproduce an image of the human body," Says Ebbers, "but to capture the model's state of feeling and evoke an emotion in the viewer."

The Hilton Head Art League also operates the Art Academy at 106 Cordillo Parkway, providing classes in all mediums by local instructors. The new semester of classes begin on March 22. There will be an exhibition of artwork on March 24 by students of the Academy who took classes during the past Fall and Winter semesters. For information about upcoming classes, call 843-842-5738.
