Spring Shows at Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, NC, Feature Still Life and Guntram Gersch Retrospective

The Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, NC, celebrates spring with new exhibitions including: Still Life Runs Deep and Guntram Gersch: Forty Years, plus a small collection of solar sculpture by Mexican artist Armando Santa Ana.

The vibrant and eclectic still life show, Still Life Runs Deep, highlights strong representation by Buck Brandt, Spartanburg, SC; Michael Brodeur, Greg Flint and Diane Hopkins-Hughs, Greenville, SC; Linda McCane, Asheville, NC; Sarah Noble, York, PA. There is also still life work by Richard Conn, Spartanburg, Karen Dickson, Saluda, NC and Dabney Mahanes, Greenville.

Brandt is a self taught artist whose large and colorful oils dramatize the influence of Henri Matisse. Brodeur and Noble approach the still life genre with humor, innovation, elegance and intellect. Flint's collection of object studies consists of enamel on steel as well as digitally manipulated Polaroids. Hopkins-Hughs' photographs are beautifully arranged and linger in the mind like a dream. McCane's still life setups are characterized by rich colors and powerful brush strokes.

Guntrum Gersch is a little known, but highly regarded abstract painter who divides his time between Tryon and Evian, France. "My work has always been an expression of my inner life," says the artist. Beginning his career in Chicago in the 1960s, Gersch's primary influences were Jackson Pollock and Hans Hofmann, and later, Cy Twombly. He has exhibited in Europe, the Middle East and the United States and is in many private collections. There are more than 55 paintings in the show.

Programs related to the exhibitions include "Walk & Talk" tour of the art on Mar. 11, 2007, at 2pm; a documentary film about the New York art scene between 1940-1970, on Apr. 3, 2007, at 7pm; a still life painting workshop, Apr. 14, 2007, from 9am-1pm.
